Address by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Canada H.E. Alexander Darchiev at the annual Russian Ball in Ottawa (October 27, 2018)
Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends and comrades,
I am pleased to welcome the Russian-Canadian community, Russian speakers and Canadians at this wonderful Russian Ball in the very heart of Ottawa which has become, since first held in 2016, a regular event symbolizing cultural synergy between our nations.
Russian Ball is very symbolic and reminiscent of Leo Tolstoy’s “War and Peace” romantic characters, like Natasha Rostova and Andrei Bolkonsky who first met at the ball and fell in love; and I hope you will share my praise to this event’s organizers, to incredible Natalia Taryshkina for their tireless efforts to build bridges between Russia and Canada highlighting Russian and Russian-speaking community as an integral part of multicultural Canadian society.
Russia and Canada are very much alike existing in the same cold and challenging climate which allows, however, despite its global change, to play hockey nearly all the year round; our territories are so vast that to most locations to the north of Churchill or Magadan in Russia you can only fly with chances to return only if the weather permits.
Feel yourself comfortable, enjoy the show and have a fire dance at the after party as a follow-up that connects classic Russian Ball with modern Russian disco; and let me propose a toast for Russian-Canadian friendship and our truly warm and heartful neighborhood across the North Pole, across the Pacific and across the Atlantic Ocean.
Thank you for your kind attention.
